First, I must say I have seen INGENUE more than once. I own the DVD and the companion book.If you crave action-packed, big budget sci/fi movies with little to no actual plot, then move along. This is not the movie that you seek. If on the other hand you enjoy thought provoking, emotion provoking, well plotted, well written, well directed and well acted movies, then pop some popcorn, slip this DVD in and sit back. Keep tissues handy--just saying. I have seen this twice already; including its premier in the Indiana State Museum's IMAX theater. INGENUE is a tender and poignant story about a family thrust into an extraordinary situation. As they deal with the issues raised, they all learn something about themselves and grow from that. I especially liked the mother, she was so strong throughout, even though she didn't think she was. Kate Chaplin did a superb job drawing it all together.But then, Ms. Chaplin had a great team to work with, including the talented David Kemp who composed the soundtrack. Mr. Kemp wrote the original music and used local, Central Indiana musicians and bands (Lowdown and Deadbeat Heroes) for the recording. He has a wonderful sense of musical timing, pairing just the right style of music and tone to add yet another layer of emotion to what Ms. Chaplin had already created visually and from her talent.

Firstly I'm a fan of the genre but primarily a fan of film. The Dead 2: India in my opinion really improved on the areas which if I'm critical the first film needed improving on. The acting by Joseph Millson was nothing short of emphatic, his emotion really shone through and for this the film is much more mainstream as opposed to being pigeon holed as a genre movie. I also enjoyed the pacing of the film and the gorgeous vistas played a part on the overall quality of the film. The bigger budget that the Ford's clearly had on this movie was well utilised and the effects were first class. If you are a fan of the genre then I'm sure you will enjoy this but more importantly if you are a fan of film them go out and see this, it really is a great movie!

Shield of Straw (2013) (Japanese Thriller) Viewed on April 26th, 2013 at Shinuku Piccadilly Cinema in Tokyo, Japan. No subtitles.After a young girl is murdered, the grandfather publicly issues a $10 million bounty on the head of the prime suspect (an already convicted rapist/murderer played by Tatsuya Fujiwara). An idealistic cop (Takao Osawa) is assigned the protect and transport the suspect despite the repeated assassination attempts. This film by Takashi Miike is absorbing and pushes the protagonist's ideals to the limit, especially considering how the suspect is obviously a homicidal maniac whose protection endangers the lives of both police officers and citizens. As the bodycount of innocent deaths rise, it becomes more and more difficult to justify the suspects' protection. There are a few good action moments to enjoy, but the tension is expressed more so in the threat than the actual violence itself.One thing I would like to point out is with regard to the performances by both lead actors, which are very strong. This is a bit surprising given their histories. I would not personally classify Tatsuya Fujiwara as a "great" actor, and he does not belong in the same ranks as other Japanese stars like Hiroshi Abe and Koji Yakusho. That said, he has definitely grown on me over the past few years with his performances in "Parade" (2009) and now this film. I see him building a respectable career into the future. Then there's Takao Osawa, a man who has had his fair share of cartoonish and/or stiff performances. But here he turns in the best performance of his career, and actually carries the film on his shoulders from start to finish. Ironically, I also recently saw him give a good performance in "Strawberry Night" (2012), so he is also growing on me.Miike's direction is impressive as always. He represents a great example of a once cult director who has retained his filmmaking qualities despite turning to mainstream projects. In fact, I'd say that his "hit or miss" career has actually grown more consistent in recent years. Fans should see "Shield of Straw" as soon as possible.P.S. - This film was apparently panned at the Cannes Film Festival, which is not much of a surprise since it's probably the most "commercial" film in competition.

Victory Venkatesh was actually in a need of a disparate HIT . But he ended up selecting a Cocktail of stories titled 'Shadow'. In this movie one can see many films starting from a same old revenge story with a Mafia backdrop same as 'Kantri' , then you find 'Gabbar Singh' songs and dialogues , then you find some cinematography shots seen in the opening scenes of 'Don 2' , then you find the same locations on screen which you have already seen in 'Billa' , 'Don' and 'Don 2' , sometimes you feel that 'Tulasi' is been watched by you. Tapsee was like always , over- acting. The director lost grip on the story and the screenplay as well after the first 35 minutes of the film , and even the audiences get bored with unwanted songs and very weak dialogues and unpleasant comedy. You will only smile or at least give a smirk for exactly THREE minutes when Thagubothu Ramesh comes on the screen. And please don't think that why I haven't given any positives till now , because i found none. So it is not at all recommended for any group of audiences , do not watch it even if it is aired on any channel after a few months.I'm giving this rating because the cinematography of the title song was nice and other songs were okay , hence this rating. I'm not sure what to make of this film, it came across as very disjointed. The characters seemed very shallow and not really at all interesting or engaging. There were several scenes that seemed out of place or completely needless. Many scenes also seemed far too long and awkward. Honestly, it's a miracle I made it through the whole film and didn't turn it off. I kept hoping it would get better. Not so much. I am amazed this film is rated as high as it is. Cinematically, that camera work was nothing special. However, there were a few scenes where the camera work was distracting and also a few awkward slow-motion moments. The acting seemed very rigid, and not natural at all. It also seemed a bit preachy in spots, it appears that regurgitation of an agenda was more important than a dynamic story.

I saw this film at the Imagine film festival 2013 in Amsterdam. The plot is straightforward and simple: An alien spider that was planted in a human body, escapes from the hospital where the human was treated. The military takes over the hospital but fails miserably to contain the menace, in spite of showcasing an assortment of weapons and heavily decorated brass. A professional exterminator (Alex) and his volunteer helper (Jose) take over where the military falls short, and simultaneously take care of many hilarious moments that turn this film into an entertaining production, and let us overlook several of its faults.The spider in question quadruples in size every four hours. In the beginning of the story, the spider was a bit scary while it had a believable size. At first, it traversed the facility tubes of the hospital and could turn up anywhere in the building. Later on, it used the sewer system of the city while moving to a suitable location to plant eggs. But when it started growing exponentially, it became more of a predator (like a lion or a tiger), thereby loosing most of its scariness inherent to crawling insects. Still fierceful, of course, but not in a way fitting in the Horror genre.The exterminator duo, professional Alex with volunteer Jose, takes care of the humorous aspects, while the rest of the cast is one-dimensional entourage. Some of the military, the general and lieutenant Kelly, show more than one dimension in sparse better moments. The general is unexpectedly flexible in allowing help from outside the army, at moments when he considers himself powerless, in spite of all the guns and gadgets under his command. Lieutenant Kelly sticks to her role as someone who has everything under control (famous quote: "it's my job"). We see that events in this unusual case evidently outgrow her training and eventually overpower her, after which she gets an important role as the maiden in distress, with Alex as the obvious knight to rescue her by whatever unorthodox means.All in all, we talk about family entertainment here. The label SciFi (IMDb) is not very appropriate, in my opinion. Instead, the Imagine festival website did it better with "Horror – Comedy". The exterminator duo (Alex and Jose) turn this movie into something interesting. Without them there is not much left to admire; not even the animated spider leaves an impression on us. With its 80 minutes running time, this movie is not too long for its minimal contents and yet succeeds in keeping our attention.

So I just came back from a pre screening for this film and I won't give away any spoilers. I will say it wasn't that great but not horrible. The acting was pretty bad, the strongest character was the lead stoner guy. It does a decent job of setting up the found footage aspect but its follows the extremely cliché horror conventions and stereo types so its highly predictable. There's no cool kills or gore it was all really lamely attempted and there's so many awesome kills you could do in a bigfoot movie so it seemed a bit of a wasted opportunity. I know a lot of people will hate the ending its pretty anti climatic and a tad silly. My biggest grudge with the film is its a found footage movie but there's titles and a score. You don't score a found footage movie! The object of these films is to make the viewer forget there watching a movie and make them believe there watching something real. If you have music playing over your scenes it takes that element away completely. What the movie did do right was the sound design, it makes some of the bigfoot scenes intense but they never fully get to a level of "scary" or "frightening". I doubt it will get a theatrical release it will probably be on Netflix by summer but if its lucky it will get some around Halloween in some areas. I can say though its probably the best attempt at a bigfoot horror movie i've seen, i've only seen a few but none have been very good. If your into low budget horror i'd give it a shot you will find some thrills but for a veteran horror lover it won't fully satisfy. 5 out of 10

Suzi Lorraine demonstrated in the film 'Won Ton Baby' her ability to handle comedy roles as well as those in Horror and Thriller genre movies. She has certainly enhanced her fast developing reputation as a versatile actress with her performance in this romantic comedy film. Indeed, I wonder if the producers of 'Dry Spell' were encouraged to cast Suzi in the lead role of Sasha after watching her performance in 'Won Ton Baby'. Once again, she displayed her ability to utilise a range of expressions, gestures and body language to full effect and capture attention as well as deliver hilarious one-liners. Her scenes with Tim Swan, in the role of Jeff towards the end of the film are particularly memorable and well filmed.'Dry Slip' earned my appreciation with its fresh approach to romantic comedy through original story line and interesting characters which brought a smile to my face on numerous occasions as we follow the romantic misadventures and escapades of Sasha and her husband Kyle played by Kyle Hoskins as they try to disentangle their relationship. The film is ably directed by Travis Legge whose future work will no doubt attract my attention again in the future.The story is well constructed in neat layers. No time is wasted in introducing the viewer to the principal personalities and the background to their relationships. Plot foundations are firmly laid as the main supporting roles of the couples' friends are introduced. Further developments in the storyline appear in well structured scenes at regular intervals as the plot and characters combine to make compelling viewing as one tries to anticipate how the web of dilemmas and predicaments that the two central characters have found themselves entangled up in is going to be resolved. The final scenes are very effectively produced with the unexpected sudden twist to the story provided in the finishing straight when the humour elements are eclipsed by serious emotional considerations.The past film acting experience of the cast members ranges from no previous experience to very extensive but they all blend together admirably to present an enjoyable viewing experience. The only names that I recognised from the cast list were those of Suzi and Rachael Robbins ('Bikini Bloodbath' films). As far as the lesser known names were concerned, I was particularly impressed with Amber-Elizabeth Sawyer as Lacey, Deann Baker as Karen and Tim Swan. Deann is a young lady who projects tremendous confidence in her effervescent, bubbling performance and makes the maximum impact in the amount of screen time afforded to her character. Amber-Elizabeth's scenes involving verbal exchanges with Suzi are vital ingredients in propelling the story forward and I look forward to observing how this talented young lady's career progresses. Kyle Hoskins has been perfectly cast as the husband as he radiates warmth and attracts empathy. Kyle's scenes involving his eccentric 'dates' are among the film's highlights.With regard to the technical aspects of the film, one of my main gripes with films these days is the increasing use of dim lighting and the mumbling delivery of lines by actors when neither is necessary in an effort to create the impression of it being trendy and fashionable film making. I am pleased to report that 'Dry Spell' does not suffer from such irritations as the lighting is consistently bright throughout, focus is sharp and all actors deliver their lines with clarity, and shots are well framed.It is not often that I view a film again so quickly after the initial viewing but I did so in this case in order to savour several moments enjoyed the first time round.

Elizabeth Bishop and her lover Lota de Macedo Soares must have had a pretty rocky relationship—Lota ended up killing herself—but you'd never know it from this very prim and proper biopic. The filmmakers tone down any elements that might disturb or challenge a target audience looking not for historical accuracy (or even good drama) but rather for inspiring role models. So Bishop and de Macedo Soares are shown as two strong, successful, and loving women who never let little problems like raging alcoholism, rampant ruling-class careerism, or crushing egomania get them down, until the final reel, when the whole movie comes off the rails.Consider the scene where Elizabeth bakes a birthday cake for her beloved, who stands her up. What happens when self-obsessed Lota finally shows up, only to find Elizabeth sleeping off a bender? "Oh, you so hurt my feelings!" "Oh, so sorry, lovey-poo!" A little kissy-kissy and it's all better. Sorry, I ain't buying it. How much closer to the truth (not to mention more interesting, and believable) if this scene had erupted in a screaming row a la "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", with the bitter, alcoholic American vs. the brazen Brazil nut. Alas, that would never do in a movie that's all about role models, not real people who really lived, and really ended up in mental hospitals and really committed suicide.When Lota does go certifiably crazy, this development seems to come from nowhere, since we haven't been shown a clue that anything was wrong with her or her perfect world. In real life, there's always a telltale breadcrumb trail leading to the nervous breakdown, but not in this movie. Lota just all of a sudden goes crazy. Go figure.Despite its glossy veneer, this is a deeply phony movie, a deceptive testament to a poet and an architect who both deserve to be more realistically portrayed on the screen. Maybe someday we'll see a competent documentary about these two women, their achievements, and their complex relationship, instead of this beautifully shot, polite and pandering excuse for a biopic.
