I had a chance to see this film in Denver last night. The film is laughs from beginning to end. Yes, there is quite a bit of profanity (it might not be a film for the little ones), but it works well with the plot/characters. I especially enjoyed the ensemble feel to the cast every actor had their moment. After the film we had a Q&A with the Director, Paul Seetachitt. How often does one get a chance to do that?! It was interesting to hear some of the stories behind the making of the movie. I have already decided I need to see this again. Go see Rock Jocks! It Rocks!!!

Yes... or shall I say No ... Well it happened again. But let's start from the very beginning here. When you live in a country that has been ruined in a 1st and 2nd world war you can imagine and somehow accept that for some period in time war-related movies will be main stream of all productions. However it's years now and don't get me wrong here - we shall all remember- but it's more than 90+ years now and we have enough. Most movies made in Poland has something with war and how WE - Polish country are poor because of that fact. Yes I know - it has devastating effect on economy etc. but why shall I watch it over and over again since I'm 30+years now. So you have background now. Lets go to the movie itself. Not only had I feeling that I've seen it before but this movie is terribly boring. Filmed in 3 different locations (woods, house and windmill) causes your eyes to close in the middle of it. Action ? Well.. there is only one action - in other words: "Shooting scene" is only once... Actors are good. You will see quite good polish actors - this is the only thing that keeps it in one piece. Just to summarize - it's again about war, it starts slowly, it is slow and boring, and finishes very slowly - so at the end of the movie you stand up and say What the heck ? Not worth watching - save 1.5hrs for another movie. It is low budget production about scouts rather than soldiers - at least this is my feeling 1 day after watching it. Yes - i gave it some time in my head to process - with no effect - as it is not 21st century breath taking movie.

Puhdistus (aka Purge) is a well executed drama based on a book by Sofi Oksanen. It pictures the torments of the people of Estonia in the soviet era without being a historical drama. It tells a story of two sisters, of their love to a same man which leads to a deception and ultimate disappointment. A young woman who is brought back by a coincidence is also connected to their past in the beginning.For a finnish movie with a limited budget this is absolutely the film of the year or maybe a film of the few decades. There'd been nothing like this coming out from the finnish cinema until now. Finnish movies consists of mainly farce comedies, dull historical movies, war movies and that's just about all. Antti J. Jokinen breaks this eternal line of just average ordinary movies by bringing us a film with a beautiful cinematography, fantastic camera work, strong actor performance and an interesting plot. It is loyal to the book but it wouldn't be fair to judge the film and book against each other as with films it has to be consistent and quite solid up until the end and the book can go deeper.The movie itself is very straight forward film with nothing left to question. That may be one drawback among a few others that kept me from giving this movie full ten stars. The other issue is that the movie doesn't engage as much as it should. Scenes just roll from one to another quite fast and things just happen and that feeling may not be avoided just after the first hour. I guessed what was going to happen but still after the film i felt entertained and not at all disappointed.I also thought that presenting only one dimensional good vs. evil doesn't do the movie any good. These three three things just made me take a few stars off. It's still an enjoyable strong film that makes an impression but it's good for one time viewing only.Jokinen has succeeded with this film and i sure hope he has many other interesting films to direct in the future.

I want to thank the makers of this film for reminding us that enemies can show great love in times of great strife.While there is a lot of action in this film resulting in a PG-13 rating, care was taken to make this viewable by the whole family and its rating would certainly have to be considered a mild PG-13.This film goes far beyond the many mindless war films that simply glorify violence. Anyone watching this film would have a renewed sense of hope that we can live more peaceably together.Kudos to the filmmakers and keep on doing what you do. Even if you don't have the Hollywood budgets, you make entertaining, truthful and inspiring films I can take my kids to. Thank you.

I know there is a recession on at the moment and I understand that actors, just like everybody else, need to earn a crust, but why in holy hell did Marc Macaulay appear in this poor excuse for a movie, lets call it a 'Film Substitute' from now an shall we? In case your unfamiliar (that means "don't know") with his work, there's 'Edward Scissorhands', 'Monster', 'Drive Angry' the list is very long but 'this' crap is really lowering his all ready quite low standards. Can a real actor recover from this sort of thing?Well now, this film has everything the discerning Redneck could ever want, atrocious acting, tractors, WWF Wrestlers, 4 wheel drive contests, loads of T&A, very bad acting, oh wait, bad acting's been said, hot Gypsy chicks with huge breasts that drive hot-rods....the list just goes on. Nearly forgot to mention the enforced mud wrestling.The problem with this flick is that they should have stopped with just using bad 'Honey Boo Boo' style acting but they had to try to use a fancy storyline (no Vampires at least). An ancient curse that involves wearing colored contacts and staring really, really hard at people while copying the neck movement of an Owl. I hope the writer got paid a little extra for that one. Here's a thought, will they ever put this garbage onto Blu-ray? (Shudder)If your fed up with watching "real" movies then give one of these new fangled 'Film Substitutes' a try.
