Description of Beruseruku: Ougon jidaihen I - Haou no tamago (2012):

This arc is a flashback showing Guts' youth and what led him to become the "Black Swordsman". Guts grows up as a young mercenary until his enrollment in the Band of the Hawk. He develops complex relationships with Casca and Griffith, the Band's charismatic leader and holder of the Crimson Behelit, who leads the Band to its rise to prominence within the Midland army. Griffith is elevated from his commoner status to the nobility, causing some resentment, and after sleeping with the King's daughter, Griffith is imprisoned, and the Hawks are declared outlaws. The Hawks manage to rescue Griffith, only to find him broken mentally and physically. From a conventional medieval European background, the story shifts to fantasy and horror, with the apparition of the Eclipse ceremony that ends with the destruction of the Band, as per Griffith's sacrifice in order to become Femto, the fifth member of the God Hand, and reclaim his path towards his dream. This is the same story as in the original series but shorted down to fit the big screen.The main problem is not the story or the anything like that, but the total lack of control in this project, the CG used for this film is by far the most horrible i have seen in some time. It takes all the visual joy out of this film. I don't know if this has to do whit the meltdown in the anime industry as a whole but the lack of talented staff and a budget mad this the most disappointing film of 2012 for me.But if the visual's don't matter to you as the viewer the i still say that you get more out of the original series.If this is a indication of things to come we are in serous danger of loosing out on some potential awesomeness to come.

A very strange movie that is very hard to describe. It involves children and a very strange night with weird things (not unnatural) happening. It is a drama, but it does have a lot of tension filled moments in it too. Almost like a thriller (it is anything but), the movie has some very stellar performances.The intriguing part for me, is that I couldn't put my finger on it and say what made me like this. One thing is for sure, the short running time does help a lot. You wouldn't want this to drag along for a long time. Human interactions are very sensible and may be the strong point of the movie too. Difficult to recommend, you may want to read the synopsis first, especially if you're not into watching any movie like I am

This just doesn't seem right – this single reviewer telling you, our esteemed readers, what he thinks about a movie about love? What also seems inappropriate is the untimely period – he who will spend Valentine's Day alone advising you whether you should catch this romance movie with your other half (or at least someone whom you hope will bless you with the status of "attached")? Well, this columnist will try his very best to comment on this ensemble piece featuring some of the best looking people in showbiz.The story is, well, about love and the unfathomable things it makes people do. The characters in this movie are in some way related to each other, which is probably an attempt by the screenwriters to model the movie after the hugely successful Love Actually (2003), a feel good British production which never fails to make a couple's lazy afternoon at home. Here, the filmmakers have the couples situated in Taipei and Beijing, making them encounter joy, laughter, pain, crying and more essentially, love, over plot lines which may be familiar with the common folk.For the older guys, we have Shu Qi playing the obligatory materialistic woman who yearns to find her true self and Zhao Wei (14 Blades) taking the role of a fearless single mother who wants nothing more than the best for her son. For the younger ones, you will be rooting for the sweet Ivy Chen (Hear Me) and Amber Kuo (Au Revoir Taipei) as two best friends who fall out after Chen gets becomes pregnant, thanks to Kuo's confused boyfriend.Female viewers are treated with eye candy in the form of Ethan Ruan (Monga) as a stuttering neighbourhood boy who is wiser than he looks, Mark Chao (Monga) as a successful businessman who doesn't believe in commitment and Eddie Peng as a filmmaker wannabe who has a lot to learn about responsibility in a relationship. They are joined by director Doze Niu who plays a middle aged man who lives a lifestyle only known to the rich and famous. Incidentally, all four leading men have scenes featuring their well built physique (check out those muscles and abs!) so get ready to drool, ladies.The star studded affair is made more exciting by cameos from other familiar Taiwanese personalities like Rhydian Vaughan (the other good looker from Monga), Kang Kang (you'd know him from Taiwanese variety shows) and Charge Pu (most commonly known for his duet "Confucius Says" with Bowie Tseng).Oh, has someone forgotten about the story and how it's supposed to inspire viewers to reflect on their own notions of love? With its 125 minute runtime, the filmmakers seem to be more concerned about making its stars look good on screen (after all, it's Mark Lee of "In the Mood for Love" fame who is calling the shots behind the cinematography department) than engaging its audience in a emotional journey. Sure, there are some poignant moments in the movie which may tug at your heartstrings, but unfortunately, it feels more like a touch and go affair. More Indian cop stuff, the historical background of police "Encounter Shootings" served up in a structure like the sixties Mario Adorf Straße der Verheißung mashed with Incident at Owl Creek and filmed like a contemporary Korean thriller.This one opens with a car hold up conducted by an ax wielding extortionist, with police recruit Varma/Adi on his first day chasing suspect Siddiqui in the monsoonal rain, ending with the fugitive in his sights.Three different choices are shown. Personable cast and accomplished filming fail to elevate the piece above it's tricksy structure. A long time project for beginner director Kumar, the film ended up on the screen in the way it was written after variations in the cutting room.

I got to watch a screener of "The Lackey" and being it's an indie film I was sort of just checking it out for the hell of it but I have to say I was pretty impressed with it. Most time indie films stray from action and high-impact movies because of budget constraints but "The Lackey" bull dozed through that stereo type with great fighting sequences, gun play even explosions that didn't look half-ass but seriously legit. And the cast was really believable in which I applaud because they really put an effort into finding Character Actors and not just a bunch of good looking people wanting to be actors. I don't know what the budget was but it looked like a million dollar movie. Nice Job.

Isdraken fits into the youth adventure genre. Unlike most Swedish films, the action is fast paced, which gives it an appeal for young audiences. The film can be viewed as an adventure, but for those who enjoy looking for metaphors and hidden meanings, they are there as well. The Swedish director, Martin Högdahl, has managed to make his film equally appealing to both viewers seeking pure entertainment and those willing to invest some thought into the story and its messages.Fiery metal riffs and melodic rock ballads greatly enhance the film's atmosphere. The score is used mainly as a characterization device – certain songs are associated with the appearance of a character or an event.The narrative calls to mind the 2003 film starring Haley Joel Osemont Second Hand Lions and the 2010 film Hesher. But it is by far more suitable for family viewing than Hesher and much more upbeat than Second Hand Lions.None of the characters is particularly memorable, however the performance of Philip Olsson (for whom the role of Mik in Isdraken is a debut) does impress as he manages to convey a lot of personality into his character.As with most Swedish films, viewers will be treated to bright colors, and widescreen photography that emphasizes the nature of the country (snow, ice, forests …and still more snow).Surprisingly, I ended up satisfied, though my expectations for an emotional drama were not met. I don't hesitate to recommend the film – especially if you intend to show it to or see it with youngsters.

... the pleasure of watching Catherine Frot and Andre Dussollier donning once more the mantles of Prudence and Belisaire Beresford, the Nick and Nora Charles of Le Belle France albeit a Nick and Nora one generation older with grandchildren yet. I've been in love with Catherine Frot for years and I don't care who knows it, as much for her incredible range as for her drop dead gorgeousness so that even when she played the mother from Hell in Vipere au poing she failed to alienate my affections but let her loose on a lovable, ditzy dork as in Un Air de famille or Les Soeurs fachees and I'm gone, man, gone. In her third At Bat as Prudence Beresford she has the character down pat so that the plot - the one where the scientist has invented a world-class machine/process/drug, in this case an anti-ageing treatment that also, alas, works backwards - is immaterial, serving only as a springboard for the couple to delight us for a couple of hours with acting skills honed over a lifetime. Maybe not Cesar material but if it's pure joy you're after look no further.

What can I say. This movie wasn't what I expected. The acting wasn't really that good, but the plot was great. It started out really slow and I was ready to pull the plug on this one, but as it keeps progressing, the story just kind of sucks you in. This was a nice Thriller that I didn't expect to like. The plot twist at the end actually caught me by surprise. I still can't get into Lindsay Shaw as an actress (Pretty Little Liars) but she does a pretty okay job in this one. I'm a sucker for a "bad-boy good-girl" love story. Jean Luc Bilodeau did a pretty awesome job in here and it was a step up from his usual good guy roles. So if it's a rainy day out, or just bored, rent this and give it a go.

This film is set in a visually striking futuristic Netherlands. There is a dictator in power. This dictator, President Isimo, imposes his own subjective idea of aesthetic beauty on the country. As a result, people live in houses that look the same, children wear drab grey uniforms, and even the school has a sterile white interior. But now the dictator wants to extend his vision to the children themselves... There is no place for "ugly" in the land!This ambitious film is only 25 minutes in length but it has the comforting feel of a full length feature film right from the start. It's visually compelling, the momentum flows well, and yet the short length of the film is it's greatest shortcoming. The film should have been the standard 1 and a half hours long. There is too much plot for the time frame. For this reason, the audience doesn't get a chance to feel emotionally connected with Paul- the child in the leading role. There is too little interaction or comparison between Paul and other children to define who Paul really is. The romance between Paul and Sarah doesn't properly register as the maker's intended. When the children call for Paul and Sarah to kiss, this romantic moment in the film was unexpected, and felt out of place. The fleeting roles of the headmaster and teacher were under-developed. It would have been good to fully appreciate how the headmaster and teachers dissenting voices influence/fortify Paul in his resistance. The female 'baddie", Secretia, is too two-dimensional to be truly scary or disturbing. The escape scenes are unrealistic for adult viewers- for example the passages in the prison-like building are mainly unguarded. Despite these criticisms, the film is visually stylish and does tell it's considerable tale adequately within the time given, which is an accomplishment in itself. This makes it worth seeing. If the same makers were to make a full length version, I'd definitely want to see it.

I had heard good things about this movie and was delighted when I got the opportunity to see it today. The film was made for just under 35,000 euro so I was factoring that in when I sat down to watch it. I didn't need to. The movie looks great. The cast were believable, it was extremely well directed, the cinematography was superb, it was scary, it was clever and it ranks alongside Dead Snow, Let the Right One In and The Troll Hunter as yet another indication that Europe is definitely snapping at the heels of Asia when it comes to creative film making. Yes, it's a rip off of The Evil Dead but it's certainly the best copy to date and, regardless of the budget, it leaves the recent Evil Dead remake looking tired and dull. An excellent horror movie.

OK, trolling the streets in Tribeca and stumbled into a buzz that was flowing through the festival called Raze. First showing sold out but caught it on Monday. Holy crap this film was intense. From start to finish, awesome action with brutal female fights. I didn't know what I was walking into but glad I did. First 10 or so minutes were freaking intense! We follow a group of kidnapped chicks who are forced to fight each other to the death with there bare hands, if they refuse to fight there family members die. The origination is runny a creepy as hell couple, from what I gather the organization has been doing this for like a thousand years. The lead is super stunt girl Zoe Bell, she rocked. I was surprised to see one of the fighters being the smokin hot Rosario Dawson, that's all ill say, WOW!Anyways I would loved to check this film out again as I was mostly in shock as I watched but was entertained at the same time. I'm sure I will catch the filmmakers little Easter eggs the second time around. Good job girls!!

Excellent spy movie, making interesting parallels with actual drama of Russian politics of last decade. I would never expect it to come from France. Although Tim Roth doesn't look much like Russian, he makes good job. Additionally, the mixture of French and Russian actors is brilliant. One would wonder whether this story has some real roots related to internal affairs of Russian politicians and secret services. If you change some names and places, big part of it start to look pretty much realistic actually. I would prefer it to be a fiction. Otherwise, looks too dramatic and scary sometimes. In some parts the movie could be a bit more dynamic, but it looks more like a style than flaw.

Schultz to appear in the next scene.The best part was when this thing finally ended.Do yourself a favor and view an old episode of "F Troop" instead!

I cannot recommend this movie. I am a fan of all the lead actors. All play their parts well but in this case, the sum is far less than the parts! It is a very complicated movie and I soon lost my way. If there was a clever plot to keep me entertained then I'm afraid it went over my head. My main criticism is that I was always aware that I was watching a movie. Not once was I drawn into and absorbed by the action. The dialogue was unoriginal and to some extent the overall outcome was quite predictable. Oh, and I hate it when a man suffers severe gunshot wounds but moves around apparently uninjured a few scenes later; the rest of us mere mortals spend a week or two semi-conscious in hospital! Nothing new in this movie; don't waste your money.

I enjoyed the original film, so after a glut of stereotypical Hallmark TV Christmas films thought I'd treat my better half to an afternoon at the cinema. Big Big mistake, this has to be the worst film I've ever wasted money on, If anybody employs Marc Wooton in the future they are either certifiable or are trying a producer style filming a flop scam. I would love to say its so bad its good but its just awful.It made me long for Sky's Christmas 24 channel, " a grandpa for Christmas" is a masterpiece compared to this tripeAs a touch of trivia Martin Freeman got the role of Watson in "Sherlock" beating Matt Smith who went on to play "Dr Who" who replaced "David Tennant, who replaced Martin Freeman in this. Tennant got the worst of the deal.

The Kings of Yorktown is a movie with flaws. However, due to its lack of funding, I feel that it satisfied my needs out of a movie and will definitely add it to my list to watch again in the future. The plot of the movie kept me interested the entire time and while some parts again were flawed it provided a decent laugh if nothing else. The Actors/actresses are not without training/talent and enjoyed the tone of the movie because of them. Mathew Rhode did an exceptional job and look forward to seeing him in more movies. This movie is however hard to see as the only way to watch it is to buy it offline which is not a problem but most will not appreciate it this way.

A good movie about a young, energetic, friendly woman who, as a result of various circumstances, befriends a lovely, somewhat grumpy old lady. Not very original, as you've probably already surmised, there have been tons of movies, and TV shows covering the same relationship dynamic, and quite possibly the same basic outline. Some of those good, others bad, still others horribly bad and cliché, this however is 1 of the good 1s. The acting, directing and story-line were all good, resulting in a mellow, slow paced film with tiny peeks of highs and lows. It's shot in suburban L.A. and has a distinct L.A. feel to it, at least it did to me, in the neighborhoods, the mountainous backdrops and perhaps too in the characters. I suppose that might not be really important, but I like to get engrossed in he cities and countries I see in movies. The 1 bad thing I'd have to say about this movie though would be the ending, it seemed really abrupt, I assume the director/writer wanted us to mull over the last scene as we finished he movie but really it just left you wanting to see that scene/conversation played out and wanting the words that were implied to actually be spoken.Overall a good movie, not great but good.

The film opens with the death of two teenager's parents, leaving them to live by themselves. Money is tight for Bianca and Tomas but the arrival of two shady guys from the gym where the latter works changes everything. They put forward a scheme to rob a reclusive actor who was famous in the 60's for playing the character Maciste in peplum movies. Bianca is sent in to seduce him but things don't play out as planned.Il Futuro is a strange film that isn't really story driven at all. The crime angle that underpins the narrative is ultimately not especially important, more a device of linking Bianca to Maciste. What made the film most enjoyable for me was Manuela Martelli who was not only good in the central role but also added a strong sensual dimension to proceedings. She spends a considerable amount of time naked and covered in oil which does ensure that this is a drama that has a definite erotic angle. Rutger Hauer is additionally an interesting presence, even if his character essentially remains somewhat enigmatic.So what does it all mean? Not a huge amount I would venture. The title seems to refer to the fact that the central character's present is poor and the future is all. Bianca uses sex as a means of moving forward but it doesn't work and things end with her and her brother having learnt a few lessons from their experience. I suppose it's a coming-of-age film in some ways. But mainly it works best as a slightly left-field erotic drama; more a slice of life rather than a story.
