Now the easy thing to do is to say that Combustión is a Spanish copy of 'the fast and the furious' (as opposed to what some others wrote, it's closer to the first 'furious' than the rest). But it goes above and beyond a high-concept car race film (which eventually became formula) and adds a thriller element which really gives it an unexpected energy. The film revolves around a thieving couple, Navas and Ari, who fool rich men into Ari into their home, while her boyfriend comes in to steal from them. They eventually come across Mikel, who works at a Jewellery store. As they begin their elaborate plan on this target, they realize that Mikel is a man with a past. A past that will be useful for Navas and Ari. Thus begins a thrill-ride, riddled with thievery, adrenaline-rushing action and thumping electronic music, all adding to the protagonists' lives spiraling into madness.The three leads, Álex González, Alberto Ammann and Adriana Ugarte are more than capable at creating a chemistry, it's as simple as falling into each other's beds (not a disservice, just a trope of the action/car movie!). What makes their relationships much more believable is the predicaments they get themselves and each other into. So much so that their livelihoods become intertwined even when one of the three is not on-screen. It's a thrilling power-play that at times had me confused at who was playing who!I enjoyed that, because beyond giving the audience an exciting race-car thrill-ride, Director Daniel Calparsoro managed to add enough twists to make the audience relate to and revile the lead characters at the same time. Now, this aspect of the film is what pushes it above a standard angry- young-men-driving-while-women-raise-the-illegal-race-car-flag up and down (though looking very attractive while doing so!) into a film worth paying attention to. For guys and girls (i'm sure girls like cars as much as men do, and if not, the characters' interplay is also very exciting to watch).I wish this film came out on a different weekend from Iron Man 3, it would've gotten a good audience. I must be the only guy thinking i'd rather see Iron Man 3 a week AFTER it's release, and give this homegrown Spanish action movie a shot (after all I am Spanish and in Barcelona). Well worth the price of admission.

"Ekstra" is a very entertaining film that brings us into the world of a bit player or "extra" in the punishing world of television soap opera. This was more than just a glimpse. We get an in-depth, no-holds-barred, brutally frank expose on how bit players are treated on and off the set of a location shoot. Loida has been a bit player for many years already, enabling her to get her daughter through her education even if she was a single mother. We follow her typical experience one day when she was called to a remote shooting location in Batangas for the hit TV soap opera entitled "Nauna Kang Naging Akin". The production seems to be behind schedule , needing to shoot so many sequences to air that very night, making the director super-stressed.Through Loida, we see every indignity bit players had to endure in order to earn their seemingly measly living. They have no privacy, not enough food nor rest while on the set. They were at the constant beck, call and mercy of the director. the assistant director, the casting director. They had to wait for long periods of time under harsh conditions inflicted by weather, technical difficulties, and the inconsiderate diva behavior of the bigger stars.It was such an inspired idea to get a star of the highest caliber to play this unsung hero of the movie industry. The fact that is was no less than Ms. Vilma Santos herself playing the lead role of Loida Malabanan makes this film so much more meaningful and special. If the lead was played by a lesser star, it would not have made an impression of such great impact as this film did. Ms. Vilma Santos is the heart and soul of this film, and she was such a paradox in this role. She portrays her role in the most natural and realistic way, yet we know this was so NOT her. We know that in reality, Vilma already played the lead role in her very first movie in "Trudis Litt." She successfully dimmed her megawatt star power to appear inferior in stature to stars like Marian Rivera and Piolo Pascual who were the lead stars of the soap being shot, yet Ms. Vilma still manages to outshine them all.Ms. Cherie Gil was so deliciously good in her villainous Dona Beatriz character. Tart Carlos, more popularly known for her role as the maid Doris on "Be Careful With My Heart," has a marked role playing Loida's friend and co-extra, where her skills in comedy shone. Musical director Vincent de Jesus was very effective as the harried assistant director, scrambling to accomplish all the orders of the stressed director. This was such a revelatory and informative movie for me, to see what really happens behind those neat programs we see on TV or the big screen. We will see that behind the apparent glamour on screen, there is much chaos and exploitation on the set before those final edits were achieved. These behind-the-scenes situations were depicted so honestly such that this film could might as well have been a documentary to further the cause of fair treatment of bit players. It is a position statement as much as it was entertainment.Like "Babae sa Septic Tank" and its insider look into indie film making last year, "Ekstra" is a definite must-see for all film fans to understand more in depth on how this celluloid industry that they love works. 9/10.

5 stories narrated. 3 out of those 5 are good. 2 out of those 3 are inventive. 1 out of those 2 stars Fahadh Fasil.Paying tribute to Indian Cinema for completing 100 years, with 5 Sundarikal, is a good thing to do. And I am glad it doesn't fall short of, unlike Bollywood's Bombay Talkies. The standards are different, keeping in mind.SETHULAKSHMI - The lead actors are wonderful. The story induces lots of emotions. Starting with delicate warmth, it goes on to make us perceive the plight of young girls in India & elsewhere. 8.1/10.ESHA - If you have watched Dhoom 2, then you won't like the story. Although, the delight & suspense of watching Urvashi Sharma & Nivin Pauly enact a strange engagement is worthwhile. 7.7/10.GOWRI - The worst story out of the lot. You actually don't understand what the makers are trying to convey. It seems to be a horror story. But, I can't find the beauty (w.r.t. to the main title) nor thriller here. The lead players Kavya Madhavan & Biju Menon are wasted. In fact, their kin Rimi Tomy & Tini Tom are better. 3.4/10.KULLANTE BHARYA (Dumpy's Wife) - Dulquer Salman is the narrator on a wheelchair. He owns a Mac & a DSLR, yet cannot afford a fine wheelchair. He has a normal Nilkamal chair fitted with tires. Blast! The story looks like it was made up. The story of a short man & his lovely wife from another person's perspective. The dialogs are very good especially the taunts & chaffs of people in a residential colony about the newly married couple, but since the foundation is a tad cheeky & painted, I rate it 6.0/10.AAMI - A family guy working as a realty agent is driving on his way to home. What entangles with an Arabian client & local gundas is a mystery. And with the beauty of his pregnant wife who asks riddles as she waits for him, the story turns out to express a very good virtue. It talks about adultery, love & care. 7.6/10.But, the shorts weren't stitched together professionally; we can't know which short is directed by which director until the end credits. Grammatical errors in credits & poor editing throughout makes me take a perfect mean value. There is a sense of freshness and energy behind the production of "The Way We Dance" in which we have not seen for so long from recent Hong Kong cinema, as it is being dominated by co-op films between HK/China and often lead by aging stars. This is a film, for once, allow itself to re-define its root and restore its "home court advantage" (as one of the promo slogan suggested).Right from the very beginning, the film's intention of being a truly local film can be seen clearly. The opening saw Fleur (Cherry Ngan), an recent high school graduate working in an old tofu desert shop under her parents. This kind of old shops had been disappeared right in our eyes as the city redeveloping itself. Yet, Fleur's dream and ambition of being a great dancer has never been dampened. With a rather witty (yet highly dramatized with local comical taste, perhaps a small tribute to 80's HK film) sequence, Fleur finally got her chance to get into university to fulfill her dream. Once into the university, she quickly impressed her idol, Dave (Lockman Yeung) and join the BombA dance team to begin her dancing career. It was all going well and her involvement with the team allows BombA to finally get a chance to challenge the almighty "Roottoppers", which is a famous street dancing group. The story then get slightly twisted in which Fleur began to get into trouble with Rebecca (Janice Fan), a beautiful girl with an ambition of her own. Fleur eventually left BombA and began her bizarre relationship with the young leader of the Taichi club Alan (Babyjohn Choi). It was this relationship which helps Fleur to learn that life is far more than dancing and eventually to put what she learns into her dance move, and helping BombA to re-establish itself to be a worthy challenger in the annual dance competition.Building on this conventional type of storyline (which is actually not dis-similar from a star war type of saga). The story really tells how our hero(ine) deals her disadvantages/disappointment and clear her obstacles while keeping her faith and dream to achieve her own success. A much timely reminder of how once Hong Kong people has this kind of faith and energy to succeed, whether it is from a society/cinema standpoint. The diverse background of the characters, whether it is for each of rooftoppers' members (multicultural with minority group) or tai- chi club members (ex-con/dropouts) is also an accurate portrait of Hong Kong contemporary society (at least before the dominance of Chinese mainlander!). The subplot behind these characters, including that of Rebecca and Alan, even the leader of the rooftoppers, while at times could be distracting, serve well in terms of bringing a three dimensional view of them and allow the audiences to feel attached to them.The performance of the main character, Cherry Ngan is probably by far the biggest bright spots of the film. Her unconventional beauty and youthfulness complements well with her often fun loving character. She has a gift of lighting up an ordinary scene with her cheeky smile and she understand well how to utilize her body language/dance move when they are needed the most. Even though she would need to improve her way of pronouncing her dialogs, Ngan's performance in this film has probably put her into the stardom right away and Hong Kong cinema certainly would not mind to have its own local female lead once again. There is no doubt about the effort made by each of the dancers (many audiences certainly appreciated very much by staying on for whole end- credit being played out). Yet, the editing and certain camera movement could improve to bring more visual excitements to the dance sequence. The lighting use and some of the calligraphy of dance were at times struggle to boost dazzling dance move from the dancers in the next level. In his third feature-length work, director Adam Wong had created something that not often seen in Hong Kong cinema (film with a dance theme is something of a rarity in HK cinema). The Way We Dance will easily draw comparison with Hollywood's production Step Up franchise. However, it should be more than that, it carries the kind of freshness (with new young actor/actress, a growing up story mixing well with exciting dance scenes) but the film serves a good reminder that Hong Kong own production can just as exciting as others and our very own image and determination should not be forget, as if we are like fleur, with one leg injured, will still able to "fly" with colors.

Ilo Ilo tells a deceptively simple story with a lot of care and heart.The film is roughly set in the middle of the Asian financial crisis which also affected this small island nation.It tells of a friendship which grows between a young and rebellious boy who has just lost his beloved grandfather and his maid who arrives from Philippines to help his pregnant mother with her hectic schedule. The boys father loses his job and his mother juggles the tantrums of the brat and the increasing demands of her job which she needs to retain at all cost.Ilo Ilo demonstrates that the role of a nanny and domestic servant is very special.The tightrope that both employer and employee walk in balancing "you are a paid servant" and " you are a part of the family" can be so tight and the casualties so subtle that we don't notice the injuries until much later.In a dramatic scene, the school bully teases Jialer that his maid does not actually love him, she is just doing a job for which she is paid.This infuriates Jailer who lunges at the bully in a fit of rage. The director says the film was based on his personal experiences and how he felt that its very cruel for parents to allow maids to become like surrogate mothers and suddenly sack the maid for some reason.This can be a huge emotional trauma for the child who is unable to appreciate the reasons.While the film does not indict the system of foreign domestic helpers, it frames its argument for considering the human cost involved in a gentle way.The character of Teresa reminds us that those of us who were raised by nannies owe so much to them, and we often never acknowledge the debt fully.I completely admired the performance by Yan Yan Yeo who played Jailan's mother as the slightly humorless but ultimately kind woman.She navigates the role with the responsibility that the character must have felt, with her world crumbling around her in trying circumstances. Her performance is pitch perfect and I was amazed to know that her character was not conceived as being pregnant but after she was cast she became pregnant.She managed to convince the director to rewrite the role.Angela Bayani as the diminutive maid Teresa also delivers a stellar performance in a role that requires her to be vulnerable, strong, emotional, stoic and pragmatic at different points.Her chemistry with Jialer played by a very natural Koh Jia Ler is excellent and completely believable.The beauty of this film emerges when we juxtapose its sombre sepia images with the glitz and glamour of present day Singapore.Needless to say the intimate and de-glamorized cinematography by French lensman Benoit Soler plays a big role in creating this magic.The humour is one of the strengths of the film and although I may not have understood all the jokes about growing up in Singapore, going by the reaction of the audience Mr Chen has been successful in his efforts.Yes I did go in with very high expectations and the film did not meet all of them but that should not take anything away from this sweet and intimate film.The quality of the craft is impeccable and there are no rough edges in the film which is remarkable for a debutant director.I recently saw another period Singapore film – That Girl in Pinafore, which although not as elegant as Ilo Ilo tells an equally touching and boisterous tale of a group of teens being typical teens against the backdrop in xinyao music.These are the only two Singaporean films I have seen so far, but we foreigners who live in Singapore need to discover Singaporean cinema, which offers a window into its unique culture.Anthony Chen is the new poster boy of the fledgling film industry of Singapore after winning the Camera d'or at Cannes this year.This is his first full length feature after making eight highly acclaimed short films. Ilo Ilo is certainly a glittering debut film and hopefully the first in a long and interesting career.It may be Singapore's first Cannes winner but there must have been better films which have not garnered this kind of limelight.One hopes that Ilo Ilo is a watershed moment in Singapore cinema.
