User Review:

Norwegian screenwriter, author and director Torunn Lian's third feature film which she wrote, is an adaptation of a novel from 1898 by Norwegian 19th and 20th century author Knut Hamsun (1859-1952). It premiered in Norway, was shot on location in Norway and Sweden and is a Norwegian production which was produced by Norwegian producers John M. Jacobsen, Sveinung Golimo and American producer Pancho Kohner. It tells the story about a man named Johannes Møller who lives with his mother and his father who is a miller and a girl named Victoria Slottet who lives in a castle nearby his home with her parents and her brother named Ditlef. Johannes and Victoria has had a affectionate relationship since they were children and as they grow up their friendship becomes something more, but then Johannes leaves his home place to study and Victoria's parents makes arrangements for her to marry a man named Otto who is the son of a Swedish chamberlain and close friend of her father.Subtly and precisely directed by Norwegian filmmaker Torunn Lian, this quietly paced fictional tale which is narrated mostly from the two main characters viewpoints, draws an involving and afflicting portrayal of an everlasting human connection which on its way to becoming a harmonic unification of two hearts who has held back their affection for each other is disconnected by will of others. While notable for it's naturalistic and atmospheric milieu depictions, sterling cinematography by Danish cinematographer Harald Gunnar Paalgard, production design by production designers Petter Bävman and Are Sjaastad, costume design by Norwegian costume designer Bente Ulvik and use of light and sound, this narrative-driven story which examines themes like class distinctions, interpersonal relations and injustice depicts two heartrending studies of character and contains a timely score by Norwegian composers Jan Bang, Erik Honoré, Gaute Storaas and Arve Henriksen. This eloquently romantic, literary and modestly dramatic period piece which is set in Norway during the 19th century and where segregation makes an author suffer to reach the same social rank as the family of the woman he loves to be deemed as worthy, and his hearts' conqueror is deteriorating in an involuntary marriage, is impelled and reinforced by it's fragmented narrative structure, subtle character development and continuity, endearing characters, lyrical dialog, pivotal silence and the efficiently understated acting performances by Norwegian actress Iben M. Akerlie in her debut feature film role and Norwegian actor Jacob Oftebro. A warm, rhythmic and internal love-story where its all in the words and the expressive aura, and which is finely captured by a filmmaker and her collaborators who all deserves recognition for having accomplished to create a Norwegian costume drama which has become a rarity in Norwegian cinema and which may be of interest and delight to audiences who are more used to costume dramas from other countries.
