Description of Pruning the Family Tree (2013):
Pruning the Family Tree is a black comedy / drama about four women from one family who gather for a funeral and end up showing us that a family's values aren't always what they seem. Joe Casey has just died, and his family has gathered at the Casey house for the upcoming funeral. We first meet Joe's wife of forty years, Marilyn. The marriage between them was motivated by social expectation, not love. In keeping with the tradition in this type of marriage, Marilyn held the family together. Then there's Joe's youngest daughter, Barb. Barb has a slight physical handicap and at age 36 still lives at home. She has grown very dependent on Marilyn, out of habit not necessity. Next is Ellen, Joe's oldest daughter. Ellen left home when, at 18, she got pregnant and married. Since her divorce she has been independent, avoiding commitment and responsibility. Director Fritz Green's second feature film was shot in his hometown of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. This low-budget film has more to offer than Terrance Malick's TO THE WONDER that was also done in Bartlesville. There are weaknesses that go with limited resources, but there are strengths that showcase the talents involved. The leading actresses can go on to bigger things if the right people see this one. Fritz deserves to move up a notch too. Dawn Christie does well as the mom and should gravitate to larger work. Shelby Lynn is a beauty and is perfect as the granddaughter who has much to learn about her old grand-pappy. Renee Michaels plays the boozy daughter to a tee. Jeana Farrar portrays the special needs daughter with greater depth than you'd expect from a novice.
