Description of Grandmaster (2012):
Chandrasekhar (Mohanlal) is an IPS officer who lives some kind of a lonely life after being divorced from his wife, Deepthi (Priyamani), a leading criminal lawyer. He lost his sparkle as a police officer after his family breakdown. He lives in a dark and violent city but even when unlawful incidents take place around him, he withdraws himself from all responsibilities and is happy to live quietly. But, things change when he is made the head of the Metro Crime Stopper Cell in Kochi. In the initial days Chandrasekhar is his cool self, focusing more on household chores and the chessboard on his table. Things seem to change when he single-handedly saves three college girls abducted by a psychologically deviant guy. Chandrasekhar gets a congratulatory note from an anonymous man calling himself "Z" who challenges Chandrasekhar to figure out how he is going to bump off one target after the other. I've watched little Indian cinema, so this was a relatively new experience for me. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It's a fast-moving detective story in which we viewers are given about as much information as the detective, but he cleverly puts together the complex of clues and figures out the criminal. Plus, along with that, we have a personal involvement of the detective via his estranged wife, we have his daughter making a connection, and we have decent supporting detectives. We also have suspense and three action scenes in which the detective is very cool in exhibiting his martial arts skills. The film editing and sound use the latest techniques to jazz up the movie, and so does a lithe and moving camera.What's not to like? The story behind the killings is complex, and so is the plot devised by the killer. The appearance of an alphabet serial killer gives way to a more complicated plot. The back story of this plot ties in with Mohanlal's wife's career as a lawyer and the reason for their separation.In other ways, the characters are direct and speak directly of their philosophies, feelings, values and motivations, or else the movie conveys them through other characters and music directly. This is not the Hollywood style by any means.
